1864-67 Politically Influential Empress Carlota of Mexico
She was married to Archduke Maximilian von Habsburg of Austria, who were placed on the throne by Napoleon III. Maximilian and Carlota believed that they had the support of the Mexican people, but nationalism in Mexico was running high, and soon the Mexican people rejected foreign rule. When Maximilian refused to leave after the French troops pulled out, the Mexican forces arrested the imposed Emperor. Carlota is credited with convincing her husband not to abdicate. She went to Europe to attempt to gain support for her husband, but during that time, she slipped into a serious depression. Maximilian was executed (June 10, 1867). Carlota lived in seclusion for the last nearly sixty years of her life in Belgium and Italy, never recovering her mental health. Born as Marie Charlotte Amelie she was daughter of King Leopold I of Belgium and Princess Marie of France. She lived (1840-1926).

1925-1949 Titular Empress, Head of the Sovereign Family Princess Maria Josepha de Iturbide of Mexico
She inherited the claim to the throne from her uncle, who was grand-nephew Don Augustin de Iturbide, Emperor of Mexico 1821-23, and was adopted by Emperor Maximillian, and inheriting the Habsburg claim on the throne. Maria Josepha was born in Hungary and died in an internation camp in Romania, and was succeeded as head of the family by son of youngest daughter. Maria Josepha lived (1872-1949).
