When Ibu Mega became leader of the Democratic Party in 1993 she triggered the
opposition against President Suharto. She was ousted as party leader in 1996
but founded The Party of Democratic Struggle in 1998 and won the most seats in
the Parliament in 1999. But during the Presidential elections her aloofness and
vote-buying by her opponents cost her the post of President. This caused
serious riots all over the country and she was elected vice-President the
following day. In August the year after the ailing President Wahid charged with
the running of the daily business of the government and state, and after he was ousted
in July 2001, she was inaugurated as President. She is daughter of
Indonesia's founding father Sukarno, is married for the 3rd time and mother of
