Since 1938 a Dependency of St.Helena
(United Kingdom Dependency), with around 300 inhabitants. In 1961 all the inhabitants were evacuated to United Kingdom during a volcanic eruption. After they returned after two years universal suffrage was introduced to a 8 member Island Council where one of the members has to be a woman

The Head-Women was chairwomen of the Women's Council, which was (concerned with the welfare of women and children. She was the mother of one of the Head Men of the Islands
